Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick remains hopeful that star forward Anthony Davis will return to action next week after suffering an abdominal muscle strain. Davis, who has been a key player for the Lakers this season, underwent an MRI that confirmed the injury. He is expected to be re-evaluated within a week, potentially allowing him to rejoin the team soon if his recovery progresses well.
Davis sustained the injury during the first quarter of the Lakers’ recent game against the Philadelphia 76ers. His absence was immediately felt, as the team struggled after initially leading in the first quarter, eventually suffering a heavy defeat. Without Davis, the Lakers are missing a crucial defensive anchor and offensive contributor.
With Davis sidelined, the Lakers are relying on backup center Jaxson Hayes, along with role players such as Rui Hachimura, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Jarred Vanderbilt. Redick has also experimented with a small-ball lineup featuring LeBron James at center. However, the Lakers’ lack of frontcourt depth remains a concern, and Davis himself has previously suggested the team acquire another big man to help manage his workload.
This injury setback comes at a critical time for the Lakers, as they continue their road trip with games against the Washington Wizards, New York Knicks, and LA Clippers. Davis is expected to miss at least these matchups, with the possibility of extending his recovery through the upcoming NBA All-Star Weekend to ensure he returns at full strength.
In addition to the abdominal strain, Davis has been dealing with plantar fasciitis, which has required ongoing monitoring throughout the season. Redick noted that Davis experienced discomfort before a recent game against the Brooklyn Nets, leading the team to hold him out as a precautionary measure.
As the Lakers navigate this challenging stretch, all eyes are on Davis’ re-evaluation next week. His return could be a significant boost for the team, especially as they aim to solidify their playoff positioning in the competitive Western Conference.
