The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to be active in the trade market, but an unexpected free-agent signing could also be on the horizon this season.
The Lakers may bring back JaVale McGee to provide a veteran presence in the low post.
McGee appeared in 46 regular season games for the Sacramento Kings last season before becoming a free agent this past summer.
At 36 years old, McGee, known for his comedic errors that often landed him on Shaquille O’Neal’s “Shaqtin’ a Fool” segment on TNT, is not ready to retire just yet.
More importantly, McGee brings valuable experience playing alongside Anthony Davis in Los Angeles.
After a successful two-year stint with the Golden State Warriors, where he won back-to-back championships, McGee joined the Lakers in 2018.
When Davis was traded to the Lakers after the 2018-19 season, McGee had the chance to play alongside the nine-time All-Star and benefit from his presence on the court.
McGee averaged 6.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game on the Lakers’ NBA championship-winning 2019-20 squad.
Unfortunately, Los Angeles parted ways with the former first-round pick after Year 12, leading McGee to move around the league for a time.
While there may be other more attractive big men available on the trade market this season, bringing McGee back for his second stint with the Lakers could turn out to be one of the most underrated signings of the year.
