At 14-13 on the season, the Minnesota Timberwolves sit 10th in the Western Conference standings. After reaching the Conference Finals last season, the team has struggled following the offseason trade of Karl-Anthony Towns. The frustration has boiled over for Anthony Edwards, whose dissatisfaction with the season has been evident. Following a second consecutive home loss, Edwards unleashed a fiery rant about NBA officiating during a postgame interview.
“They’re (expletive) terrible,” Edwards said on Dec. 21. “All of them, besides the woman. But the other two dudes? Terrible. Excuses as reasons they don’t call a foul, the reason they don’t call a foul. The (expletive) was terrible. They don’t want to talk back to my coach, talk back to me. I said one thing to the ref, and he gave me a tech.”
Edwards elaborated further: “(Expletive) told one of my teammates that if I would have said, ‘Y’all calling a bad foul,’ he wouldn’t have given me a tech. They’re just sensitive and terrible. They penalize me and Ju [Randle] for being stronger than our opponent every night. We don’t get no calls. So yeah, that’s how I feel about the officials. Every game we play.”
The Timberwolves, coming off a blowout loss to Towns and the New York Knicks on Dec. 19, surrendered 13 fourth-quarter points to Stephen Curry in a loss to the Golden State Warriors. Edwards finished the game with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, shooting 6-of-20 from the floor and 4-of-11 from three-point range.
With nearly a third of the 2024-2025 season complete, Edwards’ frustrations encapsulate the Timberwolves’ struggles. Up next, they face the Atlanta Hawks in Georgia on Dec. 23, with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST.
