There were no games on Christmas Eve, but Christmas Day features four games, all taking place in Hawaii for the final day of the Diamond Head Classic.
Monday night marked the last games for most teams before the Christmas break. Despite only seven games on the slate, there were significant developments. Tennessee faced a tough challenge against Middle Tennessee. With students gone, the Blue Raiders’ outside shooting put pressure on the Volunteers. Tennessee survived, but it was a hard-fought win.
Washington suffered a shocking home loss to Seattle, a team they had beaten 19 straight times at home. This result underscores the challenges the Huskies will face in the Big Ten. Meanwhile, North Dakota State dominated Cal State Bakersfield, solidifying their status as one of the Summit League’s top teams.
Diamond Head Classic, Day 2 Recap
The action in Hawaii on Day 2 did not disappoint. Charleston defeated Loyola Chicago, leaving the Ramblers winless in the tournament heading into the final day.
In the first semifinal, Oregon State edged out Oakland in overtime. The Golden Grizzlies had a 12-point lead with four minutes left but couldn’t hold on. Oregon State advanced to the championship game.
Nebraska overcame Hawaii in the second semifinal. Despite an early lead by the Rainbow Warriors, the Huskers, led by Brice Williams and Juwan Gary, rallied for the victory. It was a scrappy but entertaining game, giving Nebraska a significant road win.
The final game of the night, tipping off at 1 AM EST, was a double-overtime thriller. Charlotte defeated Murray State in what may be one of the best games of the year. Both teams traded leads, but Charlotte, under coach Aaron Fearne, showcased resilience and earned the win.
Christmas Day Basketball
Merry Christmas! If you need a break from the NFL or NBA, tune into ESPN’s coverage of college basketball from Hawaii. The entire final day of the Diamond Head Classic will be broadcast, culminating in the championship game at 8:30 PM EST.
Picks for December 25, 2024 (Day 50):
Winner: Murray State | Loser: Loyola Chicago
Winner: Charleston | Loser: Charlotte
Winner: Hawaii | Loser: Oakland
Winner: Nebraska | Loser: Oregon State
Game of the Day: Nebraska vs. Oregon State
The championship game between Nebraska and Oregon State is a must-watch. Nebraska’s defense has hit a new level after a tough loss at Michigan State earlier this month. Meanwhile, Oregon State is among the nation’s best defensive teams.
Nebraska has the two best players on the court and should bring a stronger offensive performance with contributions from multiple players. However, Oregon State will test Nebraska both inside and on the perimeter.
It’s the perfect way to cap off the Diamond Head Classic. Enjoy the hoops!
