The Indiana Fever have made it clear that retaining two-time All-Star Kelsey Mitchell is their top priority in free agency. The 29-year-old guard has spent all seven seasons of her career with Indiana, but the team now risks losing her as she’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. While Mitchell has expressed a desire to stay with the Fever, she hasn’t ruled out exploring other options.
Another player whose future with the Fever remains uncertain is veteran guard Erica Wheeler. The former All-Star is also set to become an unrestricted free agent when the window opens in January, leaving fans eager for updates about her potential departure.
However, some overly persistent fans seem to have tested Wheeler’s patience. The 33-year-old addressed the situation with a blunt message on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
“Hahah I love how I post a tweet and then yall speak on free agency in my dms hahaha,” Wheeler wrote. “Like yall, Jan and Feb right there. Yall gone know soon! Let me beeeee lol dang can I be present in Turkey hooping. Ain’t no W conversations going on right now. Just know ima be on a roster.”
Currently playing in Turkey during the WNBA offseason, Wheeler appears in no rush to commit her future to the Fever. This isn’t surprising, given she’ll need to negotiate a possible contract extension with the team—assuming Indiana’s front office is interested in bringing her back.
Wheeler is coming off her second season of her second stint with the Fever, having previously played for the team from 2016 to 2019. Last season, the 5-foot-7 guard averaged 3.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 14.0 minutes per game across 39 appearances.
