Ja Morant, Grizzlies Break Franchise Record in Raptors Blowout

The Grizzlies are hitting their stride.

The Memphis Grizzlies might not be the flashiest team in the NBA, but they’ve firmly established themselves as one of the most well-rounded squads of the 2024-25 season. On Thursday night, they showcased their dominance with a 155-126 thrashing of the Toronto Raptors, setting a new franchise record for points in a game the day after Christmas.

Led by Ja Morant’s stellar performance, Jaren Jackson Jr.’s continued rise, and outstanding contributions from the supporting cast, the Grizzlies have surged to a 21-10 record. This impressive start is no fluke. Memphis solidified its standing as a serious title contender by not only setting a franchise milestone but also scoring the most points in a single game this season, as highlighted by Grind City Media on X (formerly Twitter).

A Two-Way Force

The Grizzlies’ success is rooted in their elite play on both ends of the floor. They now rank in the top five in both offensive and defensive rating, a testament to their balance and consistency. Memphis is fourth in points scored per 100 possessions (117.2) and fourth in points allowed per 100 possessions (107.8), giving them a net rating of +9.5, which edges out the reigning champion Boston Celtics (+9.1).

One of Memphis’ biggest strengths is its depth. They have a rotation of 10 to 12 players who can contribute without a significant drop in production. Even without Marcus Smart and GG Jackson II, and despite losing Santi Aldama early due to injury, the Grizzlies remained dominant.

The League Better Watch Out

The 2023-24 season was a rough one for the Grizzlies, marred by injuries, including Ja Morant missing all but nine games. Now, with a healthier roster, Memphis has reclaimed its spot near the top of the Western Conference hierarchy.

Morant doesn’t have to carry the load alone, either. Against the Raptors, eight players scored in double figures, with two more contributing nine and eight points, respectively. Jaren Jackson Jr. has been phenomenal all season and deserves All-Star recognition. And if Desmond Bane regains his peak form from last season, the Grizzlies could reach even greater heights.

This Grizzlies team has sent a clear message: they’re a force to be reckoned with in the race for the championship.
