The Los Angeles Lakers have experienced their share of highs and lows during JJ Redick’s inaugural season as head coach, and Tuesday night marked one of the more disappointing moments. The Lakers suffered a crushing 127-100 defeat on the road against the Phoenix Suns in NBA Cup action.
This loss was particularly significant as it marked the Lakers’ first defeat in NBA Cup play after going undefeated and winning the inaugural In-Season Tournament last season. The Suns, bolstered by the return of Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal, dominated the game. They shot over 50% from the field, connected on 17 of their 42 three-point attempts, and committed just nine turnovers.
After the game, a frustrated JJ Redick expressed his dissatisfaction with his team’s performance and hinted at potential adjustments on the defensive end. According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, Redick acknowledged the need for change.
“JJ Redick said the Lakers are going to have to look at changing their defensive schemes against the league’s better offenses,” Buha reported on X, formerly Twitter. “He said the Suns’ stars got both whatever they wanted individually offensively and also were able to generate open 3s for their teammates.”
Defense has been a persistent issue for the Lakers this season. As of Tuesday, Redick’s squad ranks fourth in offensive rating but sits at a dismal 27th in defensive rating, underscoring the urgency to address their shortcomings.
