In what many expected to be an underwhelming draft class, Los Angeles Lakers rookie Knecht has emerged as a standout during thDaltone 2024-25 NBA season. Selected 17th overall, the 23-year-old forward was overlooked by many teams due to his age. However, Knecht’s performance so far has silenced any doubts, and he now appears to have legitimate Rookie of the Year aspirations.
Initially seen as a three-point specialist brought in for quick scoring bursts, Knecht has rapidly evolved into a key starter for the Lakers alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. His ability to stretch the floor and contribute in multiple ways has made him an indispensable piece in JJ Redick’s lineup, proving he’s more than just a perimeter shooter.
Knecht’s recent performances underscore his potential. Over the last 10 games, he has scored at least 14 points in seven of them, highlighted by a 37-point eruption with nine three-pointers on November 19 in a 124-118 NBA Cup victory over the Utah Jazz. This standout game was fueled by a matchup with fellow rookie Cody Williams, the Jazz’s 10th overall pick, who many thought the Lakers might draft. While Knecht holds no animosity toward Williams, he used the game as an opportunity to prove his worth and continues to carry a chip on his shoulder, having memorized the names of all 16 players drafted ahead of him.
Knecht’s maturity and team-oriented mindset set him apart. He isn’t looking to outshine LeBron James or Anthony Davis but instead focuses on complementing the Lakers’ stars with his unique skill set. His three-point shooting, a skill Los Angeles desperately needed, has made him arguably the most crucial secondary player on the roster. Interestingly, Knecht has modeled parts of his game after his coach, JJ Redick, who was an elite sharpshooter during his playing career.
Through 20 games, including eight starts, Knecht has knocked down 48 three-pointers while shooting an impressive 42.9% from beyond the arc. He ranks second on the team in made threes, trailing only Austin Reaves, and is second in three-point shooting percentage among regular rotation players, behind Rui Hachimura. His ability to energize the team at any moment has added another dimension to the Lakers’ offense.
Motivated by being overlooked in the draft, Knecht’s determination has become a defining trait. His hunger to prove his doubters wrong, combined with his consistent shooting, has made him one of the most dangerous rookies in the league. Knecht currently ranks fourth in total points and third in points per game among all rookies. His 48 made three-pointers lead all first-year players, solidifying his status as one of the brightest young stars.
