PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Miami women’s basketball team used a stout defensive effort to hold Pittsburgh (6-6, 0-1) to just 34.5 percent shooting from the field and 27.3 percent from beyond the arc, securing a six-point road victory in their ACC opener.
With the win, Miami improved to 9-1 overall, giving first-year Head Coach Tricia Cullop her first ACC victory.
Haley Cavinder and Jasmyne Roberts led the Hurricanes (9-1, 1-0) with standout performances. Cavinder posted a double-double, scoring a game-high 22 points while pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds. She also dished out five assists and recorded one steal.
Roberts delivered an impressive all-around performance, tallying 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She added a career-high five steals and grabbed three rebounds.
Hanna Cavinder contributed eight points, led all players with six assists, and secured five rebounds.
Natalija Marshall added 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, while collecting five rebounds, one steal, and one block.
As a team, Miami shot 40.7 percent from the field, 34.8 percent from three-point range, and 75.0 percent from the free throw line. The Hurricanes recorded 16 assists on 24 made field goals.
Miami established control early, holding Pitt to 2-of-15 shooting in the first quarter and building a 15-6 lead.
The Hurricanes extended their advantage to 32-22 at halftime after a strong second quarter.
Pitt rallied in the third quarter, cutting Miami’s lead to just four points heading into the final period.
However, the Hurricanes regained control down the stretch, securing the road win to begin conference play.
Next up, Miami travels to Hawaii for its final non-conference games, facing Nevada this Thursday at 12:30 a.m. (ET), followed by a matchup against Oregon State.
