In their first game without leading scorer Paige Bueckers, the UConn women’s basketball team dominated Xavier 81-27 at the XL Center, maintaining an undefeated record in the Big East. Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with a season-high 23 points, shooting 9-for-14 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, alongside three steals, two rebounds, an assist, and a block.
Freshman standout Sarah Strong contributed 15 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in just 20 minutes. UConn’s defensive prowess was evident as they forced 32 turnovers, resulting in 42 points. The Huskies’ early defensive efforts set the tone, holding Xavier to only two field goals in the first quarter and forcing 10 turnovers.
Despite early struggles from three-point range, UConn maintained a high efficiency, shooting 55.6% in the first half. Fudd and Strong both reached double-digit points early in the second quarter, propelling UConn to a commanding lead. Freshman Allie Ziebell added a career-high 17 points, showcasing her shooting prowess from beyond the arc.
Coach Geno Auriemma’s squad showed depth and resilience, dominating even with key players like Bueckers sidelined. The Huskies’ balanced offensive and defensive efforts highlight their depth and adaptability, positioning them as a formidable force in the Big East.
