As the year draws to a close, the criticism aimed at Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark shows no signs of letting up. Recently named Athlete of the Year by Time Magazine, Clark’s recognition sparked controversy, with Washington Mystics owner Sheila Johnson alleging that race played a role in the decision. Johnson suggested the honor should have gone to the entire WNBA instead of Clark, igniting backlash from fans and athletes alike who rushed to defend the rising star.
Former NBA player Matt Barnes also weighed in during an appearance on the All the Smoke podcast, slamming Clark’s detractors and emphasizing her pivotal impact on the WNBA. Barnes acknowledged the challenges of her position as a national sensation, saying, “She’s damned if she does and she’s damned if she doesn’t.”
The 2017 NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors labeled Clark the WNBA’s “golden goose,” underscoring her value to the league. “While the NBA is struggling with ratings, dropping over 30% as they search for the next LeBron James, Kevin Durant, or Steph Curry, the WNBA has a golden goose in Caitlin Clark,” Barnes stated.
Though Barnes recognized Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson as the league’s best player, he maintained that the 22-year-old Clark has brought unprecedented opportunities and revenue to the WNBA.
“So instead of downplaying the magnitude of who she is and what she’s brought, enjoy the ride,” Barnes urged. “Take advantage of it and show fans why they should’ve been watching before Caitlin came along.”
